Russian expert: Pashinyan’s recent statement on Nagorno-Karabakh – populist and groundless
Pashinyan’s recent statement that Nagorno-Karabakh should become part of Armenia in the future is populist and groundless, and it is not based on modern political reality, Russian political analyst and expert on international issues Evgeny Mikhailov told Azernews on September 18.
“Moreover that statement is absolutely provocative against the backdrop of Moscow’s titanic efforts to resolve the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict peacefully,” he noted.
The expert mentioned that by making such statements, Pashinyan intends to please the forces of the Armenian Establishment who call for the war with Azerbaijan, and this is his big mistake if he wants to continue the strategic alliance with Russia.
Speaking of Pashinyan’s ability to realize the true situation in the Nagorno-Karabakh issue, Mikhailov said he is unlikely to be a better negotiator for Baku than former Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan.
“Sargsyan was more loyal to the wishes of Russia, but the current government of Armenia only escalates the situation with its unprofessional actions, then tries to immediately establish a dialogue with Moscow, noting ‘the centuries-old friendship’,” the expert noted.
He further said that Pashinyan, by underlining the principle of non-interference in internal affairs of Armenia during his recent visit to Moscow, somewhat forgets that it is thanks to Russia that Armenia still has statehood.
“If Pashinyan can prove to Moscow his full and complete loyalty, Russia will be able to allow him some semblance of independence in decision-making. Until this happens, the Armenian leadership should not think that Moscow will turn a blind eye to the anti-Russian outbursts of Yerevan and watch Armenia go under the full protectorate of other powers,” Mikhailov stressed.
